A CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF NEUTRAL-POINT VOLTAGE BALANCING IN THREE LEVEL NPC INVERTER

This paper presents a control method for balancing the capacitor voltage of three-level neutral-point-clamped converters (NPC). This control method overcomes one of the main problems of this converter, which is the low frequency voltage oscillation that appears in the neutral point. The algorithm is based on a carrier-based PWM. Studying a offset voltage to have optimal results in relation to power factor and modulation index is a matter of concern. This paper presents the optimal value of offset voltage in different modulation indexs and power factors. It shows the influence of power factor, modulation index to the balancing time and the maximum imbalance voltage.
