I attempted to emphasize the broad, general educational implications plant study, and, in accordance with this aim, I reduced or eliminated some of the technical botanical material which is customarily included in elementary botany texts for brief courses. Apparently this reduction and this elimination were excessive, for many requests have come to me, asking that I enlarge some portions of the text, particularly those concerning the plant groups.
