Introductory language essays

The view of this book is quite different. It assumes that the proper study of language is descriptive, flexible, and coherent. In other words, we must take our language as it is, not as some self-appointed linguistic dictator thinks it ought to be; and we must realize that a living language changes from time to time, from place to place (Nebraska English and Georgia English are not identical), and from situation to situation (the language of the poolroom is not exactly the language of the Sunday school). Facing the facts of a variable language, we must strive for as sensible a description of it as the facts permit, if we are to say that we understand” the sort of language we use.
