Handbook for the McGraw-Hill guide : Writing for college, writing for life

English is a living language, and like all living things, and like all living things, it changes over time. To see how it has changed, read a few lines from the epic poem Beowulf, written more than a thousand years ago; The Canterbury Tales by eoffrey Chaucer, written more over six hundred years ago; or a play by Shakespeare, written about four hundred years ago. Twenty-first-century English also varies from one place to another. For example, contemporary English as it is spoken and written in the United States differs from contemporary English in Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and in dozens of other contries where English is the primary language. In England the hood of a car is called a boonet, and an elevator is called a lift. Also, the word color in England is spelled colour, and so on.
