It has been five years since the fourth edition was completed. Our knowledge about the infections of animals has continued to grow, and a vast amount of literature has had to be sifted and condensed in order that we might present the pertinent facts in a single volume. We hope that those who find statements in this book that are not in accord with current knowledge will recall that the words were written in the early part of the year 1965 and will hold us responsible only for knowledge that was current at that time
