There are three instruments of thought: the extended symbols of language, the compact symbols. of mathematics, and graphics. This book exploits the potential of this third instrument. Each of these instruments permits three modes of manipulation of ideas: creation, or the formation of an initial concept; analysis, or the systematic evaluation and criticism of the concept; and communication, or the comprehensible transmission of the refined and elab- orated concept to others. These three instruments are equally powerful and equally necessary, and the scope of the intellect is limited in proportion to limitations in anyone of them
