The illustrations in this book are in large part new and are either original or have been redrawn especially for this book to provide greater clarity. We are deeply in¬debted to William Osborn, Ellen Cole, and the art department of the W. B. Saunders Company for the care, artistry and originality with which they converted our rough sketches into finished line drawings. The illustrations of general concepts are diagrammatic and designed to clarify some one point. The illustrations of animal structures are realistic in their proportions and generally include an outline of the organism for orientation. Illustrations of whole animals adhere to the actual proportions of the living animal, but some have been simplified by the omission of unnecessary detail. A conscious attempt has been made to provide uncluttered figures that will be clear without distorting the material described.
