Experimental Entomology

A little more than a year ago Professor Cummins undertook to organize a laboratory program in general entomology to accompany my lectures at the University of Pittsburgh. From the outset, Professor Cummins and I wanted to apply to entomology some of the contemporary methods and approaches being used in other branches of biology widi so much success. To this end we determined to emphasize the use of living insects and ex¬perimental techniques in the laboratory and to curtail the more traditional exercises so largely preoccupied with the structure and classification of dead insects. The resultant program was so successful and so stimulating to the students that we were asked to make it generally available in book form.
