Botany

This is an introductory text at the college level. Like the previous editions, it should be found useful not only for purposes of general education but also in providing basic training for those who will seek a career in some branch of the biological sciences. As in earlier editions, we have stressed the importance of plants in human affairs. Plants, either directly or indi¬rectly, are the sole source of food for man and all other animals, and are the major source of the energy used in industry. Most aspects of everyday life are affected by plants, and some knowledge of all these relationships is essential to a proper understanding of our environment.
